Airwaves Sales Sought by AT&T, Verizon Advance in Congress

U.S. lawmakers agreed to give regulators authority to conduct airwaves auctions sought by AT&T Inc. and Verizon Wireless to help meet surging consumer demand for smartphones, a House member said.

The auctions are part of a broad accord reached today by House and Senate members to sustain a payroll tax cut, Representative Greg Walden, an Oregon Republican, said in an interview. The legislative package faces votes in both chambers in coming days.
