As Mobile WiMAX devices begin to hit the market, the bulk of early product shipments will be external USB modems and WiMAX cards built into portable computers, according to a recent In-Stat report.

Demand for WiMAX laptop technology will be driven by the relatively low cost compared to cellular broadband, as well as the lack of mandatory service agreements to access many WiMAX networks.

“WiMAX will grow by meeting pent-up demand and offering users a lower cost alternative to existing services,” explained In-Stat analyst, Daryl Schoolar. “There will be different classes of operator control over devices. Despite what some technology advocates have said, not all WiMAX devices will follow the Wi-Fi model of full consumer ownership and control.”

In-Stat expects annual WiMAX device shipments to break the 10 million mark in 2010, despite competition from 3G wireless services, and difficulties stemming from the global economic slowdown.
